Review: One&Only Nyungwe House

At the end of February, just before the Coronavirus Pandemic shut down most of the world’s borders, we flew into the landlocked nation of Rwanda to spend some time at the gorgeous One&Only Nyungwe House located in the lush Nyungwe Forest National Park. Here’s the essential information you need to know.

  1. Location

On the very edge of Nyungwe Forest National Park in the Southwest corner of Rwanda

  2. How to get there

Fly into Kigali International Airport. Thereafter, those who want expedited arrivals will hop into a helicopter for a 30-minute panoramic transfer over Lake Kivu and the Rwandan hills. Alternatively, embark on a 5-hour drive through the beautiful countryside of Rwanda.

  3. Vibe of the hotel

Set on the placid grounds of a working tea plantation, One&Only Nyungwe House is a stunning example of when rainforest chic meets remote wilderness. The main building of the hotel is a charming one-storey afro-chic arena complete with several spacious lounges, a bar, and a romantic dining hall. Generous use of natural stones and timber rafters lend a touch of warmth to the sumptuous atmosphere. Ceiling-to-floor glass windows across the entire length of the main building overlooks one of the last mountain rainforest habitats in the world, while in the distance, a stream of mist rises from a cascading waterfall nearby. Truly a sight for the eyes.

  4. What the rooms are like

The resort’s 22 luxury rooms and suites are spread out across 8 stunning wooden villas. The two bedroom suites are perfect for families, with two bedroom wings linked by a generous high-ceilinged living room replete with a fireplace. The sumptuous bedrooms each boast extended private wooden decks looking out unto the rainforest foliage.

  5. What you can do there

Activities range from spear throwing, to hill-top archery, and complimentary tea tasting of the tea grown on the grounds. The main attraction of the area is by far chimpanzee trekking which takes place at the crack of dawn. The resort’s tranquil spa onsite provides much needed respite from the endurance-testing trek.

  6. The lowdown on the food

Guests will find the food here an absolute delight. Our first of two dinners were served sharing-style with dishes of grilled beef and chicken, mac and cheese and roasted vegetables. The second dinner was a five-course affair with inspiration from the lush surroundings of Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Doubles from USD1,799 Per Night, on a full-board basis. Not inclusive of premium wines & spirits.
